What made you decide to do an apprenticeship in the skilled trades?
Lina Goldbach: My enthusiasm for violin making was awakened during my school years through insights into various (artistic) crafts and my many years of playing the violin. I did my first internship with a violin maker after finishing school and worked with him to repair a violin in three weeks. That was when I realised that this was my profession. Today, I can name what inspired me so much back then: violin making uniquely combines craftsmanship with art, technology with creative design and science with intuition under musical aspects. You can only find something like this in a craft.
What do you think needs to change so that more young people decide to train in the skilled trades again?
LG: In a few trades it's probably like it is here in violin making - there are far too many applicants for the few training positions. At vocational schools, you have to pass a difficult aptitude test, for a dual apprenticeship you need good connections to a workshop or you have to stand out from your competitors through exceptional commitment. The high demand in turn creates disadvantages for the trainees: You have to put up with any conditions at the training place because there are hardly any alternatives. Institutions such as the chambers of crafts and trades or guilds should provide better support for inexperienced trainees and strengthen their rights.
What advice would you give to young people who are still unsure about what career they are interested in?
LG: When I asked myself what I wanted to do in my life, I based it on what I love. And I talked a lot with people who know me well and with those who work in the violin-making profession. This created a role model for me. If you take such a holistic approach to choosing a career, you can be absorbed in your work. Then you don't just find a profession, but a vocation.
Project organization of the youth choir project Cantare
2015 – 2024
Since 2015, Lina Goldbach has been organizing the Cantare youth music project on a voluntary basis in a team with other young people. In this project, pupils and students meet during the Easter vacations and rehearse a large classical musical work under professional guidance, which is performed in two concerts at the end of the rehearsal period. A varied supporting program is offered around the theme of music, such as overtone singing, beatboxing, folk dancing or jam sessions.
The special thing about Cantare is that everyone treats each other as equals - the conference is organized by everyone together. Everyone is important in the group, whether participant, kitchen helper or organizer, and everyone appreciates each other and their contribution to the project. The result is clear to hear - a great concert in which each individual becomes aware of their own voice and their influence on the whole project. In this way, the Cantare project has already been able to show many young people their way into music.
Between 2015 and 2024, she published numerous articles about Cantare and gave an interview on SWR together with conductor Salome Niedecken.
