Repairs
Repair & restoration
If major damage occurs due to an accident, incorrect storage or overloading, the instrument must be repaired to allow further playing and to avoid the risk of more serious consequential damage. Depending on the instrument, value and budget, the method of repair can be customised.
In the case of instruments of particular historical value, the original material is also preserved as far as possible. Old, unsightly traces of repairs can also be removed.
Crack repair
Cracks can be caused by excessive dryness or an impact. If you react quickly when small cracks appear, a large, costly repair can usually be avoided.
Soundpost patch
If too much pressure is exerted on the soundboard, for example in the event of a fall, the soundpost, which is clamped between the soundboard and the back inside the instrument, can push through the surface and cause a crack or even a large break. This requires special treatment, as it is an important and highly stressed acoustic center. For this repair, a lining is worked into the ceiling, which replaces the damaged material but is not visible from the outside. This preserves the stability of the acoustic center.
Neck graft
When the neck of an instrument is replaced, the original scroll is retained by means of a scarf joint. The new neck and the original material are combined in the pegbox, optimizing the best of the original condition and modernization or repair.
